The meeting was called to order promptly at 7:30pm by President Gabe
Jaen. Charlie Morehouse exhibited a Chippendale Ribbon-back Side Chair
in mahogany, and Gene Kelly displayed a recent addition to his extensive
tool collection, a small cast-iron, double-boiler glue-pot, which he believes
was used for small on-the-job assembly and repair work. Gene also shared
his idea of driving staples through corrugated paper and laying small
painted pieces on the staples to dry. The Leitgebs distributed scroll
saw plans for the candy dish they showed at last month's meeting.
Gabe Jaen mentioned that he purchased a Delta Router/Shaper and asked
other owners to share their experiences with this tool. Questions from
the floor included techniques for removing headless screws from wood.
Reports: Joe Pascucci gave the Treasurer's Report and Frank Gaizo
reported that paid-up membership now totals 177. Membership rosters showing
members' e-mail addresses are now available from Frank.
Coming Events: On Saturday, April 8th at the Brush Barn, John
Gray will give a workshop on Arts and Crafts furniture. Please contact
Gabe Jaen for additional information and to register. This will be an
all day event with lunch included. The fee is $35.00.
The Annual LIWC Show (June 3rd & 4th): The show will include
major vendors, seminars, exhibitions by members, a tool garage sale, and
a toy workshop. We may need help in getting tools delivered to the show
site. Brian Monks is in need of more volunteers. He urges members to participate,
whatever their level of skill. Charlie James is building a roster of members
who plan to attend. THIS IS YOUR SHOW! Please cooperate with the committee
in any way that you can.
Guest Speaker: We were fortunate to have Aime Fraser speak to
us about bandsaws. This has been her "tool of choice" since
she first became involved in boatbuilding in New Zealand as a high school
exchange student. Aime took us through all aspects of tuning, cutting,
proper blade size and operation of the band saw, with a wealth of practical
know-how and tips. Our thanks to Ed Schneph, who provided the band-saw
used in Aime's presentation.
