The 14" Jet bandsaw which Aime Fraser will use for her demonstration
at the March meeting will be supplied through the courtesy of John Matchak
from the Woodcraft Store in Norwalk, CT. For those who might be interested,
after the meeting, the saw will be offered for sale on very favorable
terms. Mr. Matchak is going to include a free blade and a free blade-truing
stone in the package.
The speaker for the April 5 meeting will be John Gray, a highly-qualified
woodworker and teacher. Mr. Gray is a graduate of the State University
College of Forestry at Syracuse University. For the past 10 years he has
worked at the sample shop at L. and J.G. Stickley Co, Manlius, NY. This
six-man shop produces 75-100 prototypes of new pieces each year and 75-100
special orders. The shop also does all modifications required on Stickley
Company production pieces. At our meeting Mr. Gray will give a one hour
slide presentation on the Stickley Sample Shop.
On Saturday, April 8, Mr. Gray will offer a seminar on the topic “Working
with Wood, Not against It.” He will deal with issues such as tree growth,
logging, sawmill operation, lumber production, drying wood, storage, purchasing
from rural sawmills, maximizing yield, working with defects, and working
around problems with joinery. Anyone interested in attending this seminar
should call Brian Hayward at (631) 549-9096.
We have Mario Rodriguez, a contributing editor at Fine Woodworking, tentatively
lined up as speaker for the May meeting. Topics for the presentation are
already under discussion, but any member who has suggestions should call
Bob Urso at 631-724-4625.
Members are encouraged to start working on pieces that can be submitted
for display at the Annual LIWC Expo, scheduled for June 3-4, 2000.
