Gabe Jaen opened the February meeting promptly at 7:30. He mentioned
the website, which is being updated by Kevin Hanson and is now up and
running. Check it out at http://www.liwoodworkers.org. He asked that members
that have business cards give him a sample for general information.
The membership committee reported that there were 220 members, of whom
only 175 have paid this year’s dues. Gabe reminded everyone that unpaid
members would not be getting their monthly newsletter.
Activities for the night consisted of a show-and-tell by some of the
membership. There was a nice variety of equipment and techniques. Some
of the participants were the following: Kenny Lo Fink showed off his miter-cutting
jig and a method of utilizing the quick release router collar. Ed and
Flo Leitgeb exhibited their candy dishes, and Steve Costello demonstrated
his assembly for a hall table, consisting of solid legs with veneered
aprons and top.
Ed Dillon showed his painted mirrors in frames. He did the woodworking,
and his wife did the artwork. Charlie James provided a demonstration of
butterfly patches. He explained how they are used to repair shrinkage
cracks in tabletops. Gabe Jaen brought in an old tool chest and indicated
it may be raffled off in the future. Bob Urso demonstrated his turning
techniques, and Charlie Felsen gave lessons and tips on the scroll saw.
John Balla discussed the pros and cons of the Dremel tool kit, and Gene
Kelly displayed a collection of old wood planes and rulers. There was
a spirited exchange of ideas from the floor. The question and answer session
produced some good pointers. Both the novice and the experienced benefitted
from this exchange.
Prizes were won by Joel Rachower, Bob Urso, and another winner who probably
wanted to remain anonymous (tax problems?). New members were Joe Terranova,
who is new to woodworking and hopes that he will find an outlet for his
interest and Elaine Deazley who is interested in Arts and Crafts furniture.
So ended the night and another good meeting.
