Charlie Felsen, on his last day officiating as Club President, promptly
opened the meeting at 7:30p.m. By this time members had filled several
tables with their contributions for "Toys for Tots".
Charlie announced that December 15 was the deadline date for copy for
the Club's newsletter. He encouraged members to write anything of interest.
We even have someone writing on how he rates restaurants. The subject
matter is wide open, but woodworking articles have priority.
New Members: We had one new member, Don Rivituso, who attended
our last exhibition and decided to try us out. His hobby is woodworking.
Welcome, Don. Armor Crafts of East Northport not only contributed a rocking
horse for "Toys for Tots", but they also are offering members
discounts on their craft items, which include furniture hardware and router
bits.
Show and Tell: Theo Sotirious showed us how he makes raised panel
doors for the 85 foot boat he's working on. With economy in mind, he uses
a combination of various moldings, varying thicknesses of plywood panels,
adhesives and some creativity to quickly produce doors for the boat. It
was a good presentation on a narrow aspect of cabinet making. Maybe we
can get him to do a little more on other methods of economical woodworking.
Toys for Tots: I've been around for at least three or four evenings
of Toys for Tots, and this was by far the best. The members really did
a great job. There were so many outstanding toys that I can't remember
them all. There was the beautiful parrot puzzle, the biplanes, the trucks
and cars, rocking horses, the Noah's Ark whirling toy, the cradles, the
ironing boards, the puzzles, everything. It was great! But I think special
mention should go to Neal Fergensen who made a wagon which was excellent
in itself, but his idea of bringing it to his place of work, RFI, was
outstanding. He had the wagon spilling over with toys his fellow employees
donated. Our thanks to RFI employees, and hopefully we can do the same
thing next year. Good job, Neal. Finally, the young Marines gave us an
idea of how the toys are distributed and extended their thanks to the
club on behalf of the US Marine Corps. Thanks to Jim Clancy and his committee
for a job well done.
