Hi all:

Today's question is, how can I find out what finish was used on the table I need to repair? It's a new piece (less than a year old), some type of clear finish.

I scraped some off with a knife, and it's rather cohesive (it did not shatter or splinter), but was able to scrape nicely. That's all I can tell so far. Any way to figure this out so my repair can be similar?

Thanks.

Dunk the dust of your scraping into lacquer thinner. If it dissolves, it is lacquer. And eas(ier) to repair. If not, it might be catalized lacquer which is in fact a polymerized plastic. Your are out of luck: you'll have to use some sanding in order to provide physical adhesion.

Mat, start with Alcohol.  If the finish dissolves it is shellac if not goto the next step.  Now try some paint thiner.  If the finish dissolves it should be a varnish of some kind.  If it does not dissolve then go to Roberts post.
Have a Good One, John S.
