Hi, Barry,
Sorry I'm so late offering a reply. But I did give your request a lot of thought. As a substitute for pearwood, I'd recommend red alder. A few years ago, I was looking for 5/4 cherrywood. It was unavailable, but a Wood-Ply yard man suggested that I try alder. I was very pleased with the results. After applying a light stain of natural oil, alder looks very much like pear, with just a hint of grain. Other benefits? It works very easily with hand and carving tools, glues without a problem, and it's very moderately priced.
Since Wood-Ply is out of business, not sure where it can be purchased. I usually call Condon Lumber in White Plains for all my needs. But, Roberts may sell it.
