I forgot the company during the panel discussion, but I've dealt with, and bought specialty adhesives from GNP Solutions in Holbrook. They are the Permabond dealer for the region. They deal a lot with industry and military, so he has a broad band of experience.

Actually, the hook and rubber band solution requires quite a lot of engineering. What is the tensile strength of both the rubber band and the nail itself? While it's possible to assume the nail is strong enough, so much depends upon the method of anchoring it in the wood. How deep, what kind of force, what is the nail made of, how much bend on the nail. Then the rubber band, and all those variables. The type of rubber, natural or artificial. The thickness and length, the age of the elastic. Will it wind around the nail, or I guess, nails, once or more than once? For instance, the load factor on TWO nails could be calculated as a supported beam, which is one formula, 1/8 wL squared, while if there was only one nail, it's a cantilever, pL cubed divided by 4. So the nail length become critical. Plus as you stretch the rubber band, you generate heat. Will that be enough to deform the finish on the wood (assuming Matt bothers to actually finish this alleged piece). You see? All I said was velcro, which is easy. Perhaps more complex than simply buying some stinkin' hardware and screwing it on, but certainly easier than your solution. But of course Joe, you knew that, and just wanted to see if I could keep up with you. I'm trying my best.

He does seem to be a bit ungrateful. I thought your idea was good. I was going to suggest adding a nail or hook to the side of the box and using a nice new rubberband stretched to the handle. But your Velcro idea is a far more refined and cleaner approach.
